Words by the Water update

Here’s the update on the Words by the Water publication - the Watermark magazine.

So, many weeks into this project and having come across some problems, it’s vital that solutions are found whilst remembering the central issue of a publication being produced to a deadline.

The Graphic Design students, who we’re in collaboration with, were told that a change in size is required and that something called a magloid size is needed instead of a tabloid publication. Not knowing what the word ‘magloid’ means and me being me, decided to look it up when home and found this website; a magloid template which gives dimensions etc. Let’s just say I thankfully don’t have to do the design for the publication, haha!

It was quite stressful at the beginning of the project, but using organisational skills and telephoning the English students in Lancaster, I managed to discuss any problems they were going through, for example their worry of not receiving enough copy to fill the publication.

The problem solving involved in this included me explaining the way in which the four of us would be writing articles too. In the end it turned out we had too much copy, which is not necessarily a negative issue, but a selection of particular poems had to be chosen for example due to space allocated.

So it’s going to print very soon and we are ahead of schedule ... wonderful, that’s brilliant! An awful lot of hard work has been put into it, and by writing four articles for the publication, I have had another great opportunity to get by-lines and get my work out there for a wide range of audiences.
